The biggest names in British surfing will all be heading to Fistral this weekend for the Gul Newquay Open, the final event on the UK Pro Surf Tour 2007. There are Open, Women's and Groms categories taking place throughout the weekend. The first rounds will be taking to the water early on Saturday morning with a solid schedule of surfing packed into the weekend. The contest culminates with the finals on Sunday afternoon deciding the 2007 Gul Newquay Open winners and the overall 2007 UK Pro Surf Tour Champions.
The Gul Newquay Open is drawing the cream of British surfers down to Fistral to battle it out for a final chance to add precious points to their rankings. One of the favourites to take the contest win has to be British number one and Gul team rider Russell Winter. After a top performance in the finals of Fat Face Night Surf back in June, against fellow WQS surfer Jarrad Sulliven, Russell has been away on the International circuit competing. However the British Bulldog is back on home turf this weekend and looking to once again stamp his authority on the UK circuit.
This year's UK Pro Surf Tour has been an action packed season, with injury come backs, under dog wins and surfers from the WQS coming to Britain to compete. It has been a closely fought race throughout the year with North East powerhouse Sam Lamiroy and Newquay's own Mark "Egor" Harris switching between the top two places on the rankings from event to event throughout the summer. However an un-lucky injury ruled current British Champion Egor out of the most recent event on the tour, the Portrush Open in Ireland, which meant he missed collecting some very valuable points. This unexpected twist has opened the doors for many of the top ten in the Open rankings to now be, mathematically, in with a chance to take the 2007 title. Non more than Llewellyn Whittaker who is brimming with confidence and looking like the one to beat going into this weekends contest after winning the G-Shock North East Open and Circle One Portrush Open, putting him in the number 2 spot on the Tour and taking the recent Relentless Triple Crown in association with Wavelength title.
The Women's contest is also set to be a gripping event with young Welsh hot shots, Gwen Spurlock and Gul's Beth Mason occupying the top two positions. Beth has had a busy contest schedule this year, with her Welsh team commitments meaning she missed a UK Tour event and potential points earlier in the year. However, her consecutive final finishes throughout the rest of the tour has meant she has climbed the Women's rankings and is now in serious contention for the 2007 tour title.
The eventual winners of all the categories can be proud to say they have won one of the toughest tours yet. With so many of the top players in contention for the titles, spectators can expect to see some awesome competitive surfing.

There will plenty of social events on offer to celebrate the end of the 2007 UK Pro Surf Tour. This weekend will be one of the last times all the competitors from the UK Pro Tour will be together before many depart for winter training abroad. Organisers have put together a busy social schedule throughout the weekend to celebrate before the tour draws to a close.
On the Friday night Buzios nightclub in Newquay is hosting the movie premier of MVP, the DVD produced by professional surfers Toby Atkins and last years UK tour winner Micah Lester. Saturday evening is the official Gul Newquay Open event party at the Koola Klub in Newquay with tour sponsors Skinners Brewery fuelling the party throughout the night. Doors open at 10pm, with free entry for wrist band holders before 11:30pm and kick out at 3:30am. On Sunday evening the Esplanade Hotel at South Fistral will once again host the prestigious 2007 Surf Awards in association with UK PST.
