A total of 64 teams took part in the in the seventh annual beach rugby tournament, which has become a permanent fixture in Newquay's summer calendar.

This year the Rugby Football Union (RFU) pulled out all the stops to showcase national talent Paul Sackey and James Haskell at the popular seaside event. Winger Paul Sackey of Wasps is one of the fastest players in the world and rose to fame in the last Rugby World Cup. Flank forward James Haskell, also of Wasps, is also a recent addition to the England team and tipped for big things in the future.

During the event the two England first team members played alongside amateurs and enthusiasts in fun, tag rugby games on the golden Cornish sands.

They also had their first ever surfing lessons with instructors from The Adventure Centre surf school. Both athletes took well to the water but agile winger Sackey showed his skill by staying on his feet the longest.

Back on the pitch the rugby stars joined local teams Ginger Ninjas and The Best Team Here for a friendly Battle of the Beach final. Both players showed some nifty footwork and fancy ball handling skills, which thrilled the fans lining the perimeter of the pitch.

The 02 Scrum on the Beach is a national series of competitions designed to get more people into rugby. Teams play non–contact, tag rugby in a safe, family friendly format pioneered by Lusty Glazed based company Beach Rugby.

The presence of the England rugby players certainly helped to inspire the teams in the tournament as the standard of play was very high throughout the weekend.

In the end it was Newquay team Retallack Spa which inched out last year's winners Stash in a hard–fought final under floodlight on Sunday night.

As well as top sporting action, the spectators were treated to live commentary relayed on giant cliff–side screens, entertained by local band Small Wonder and enthralled by a gigantic fireworks display to mark the end of the event.

Organiser Jeremy Griffiths commented: "I know we say this every year, but this was without doubt the best Beach Rugby tournament ever. The sponsors O2 were fabulous, the public were brilliant and everything went without a hitch. The sun even shined on us!

"Once again the event was successful in attracting people from all over the country to the UK's best known and best loved Beach Rugby contest. It's a great community event that adds value to Newquay during the August Bank Holiday and offers something for all the family in a safe happy friendly environment.

"The presence of Sackey and Haskell added a new dimension and helped to raise the everyone's game. I'd like to thank the RFU for bringing these giants of rugby along to help promote community rugby in Cornwall and beyond."

The O2 Scrum on the Beach now moves on to London's Trafalgar Square where organisers will attempt to re–create a little part of Cornwall in the Capital for the final tournament of its four–part series.
