Two of the biggest names in English rugby, Paul Sackey and James Haskell, will play in the Beach Rugby tournament at Lusty Glaze Beach in Newquay, Cornwall later this month. watch 2007 beach rugby video

The England team members will join the sporting action and meet fans at the country's biggest and best known Beach Rugby festival taking place over the Bank Holiday weekend (23-24 August).

Now part of the O2 Scrum on the Beach series organised in conjunction with the Rugby Football Union (RFU), the tournament at Lusty Glaze Beach is the penultimate event before a final showdown at London's Trafalgar Square the following weekend.

The Beach Rugby series pioneered at Lusty Glaze is designed to promote community rugby and get more people involved in the sport, so the presence of two of England's biggest stars is a major coup for organisers.

Winger Paul Sackey of Wasps is one of the fastest players in the world and rose to fame in the last Rugby World Cup. Flank forward James Haskell, also of Wasps, is a recent addition to the England team and is expected to fill the boots of his hero Lawrence Dallaglio.

The two players will be showing off their skills in the non-contact version of their sport, when they play tag rugby on the beach against mixed teams of all ages and abilities.

Event director Jeremy Griffiths from Lusty Glaze commented: "This year's Beach Rugby promises to be a truly inspirational event. Players and spectators will receive a masterclass in rugby from two of the best players in England, if not the world."

As well as stars from the current team, a couple of rugby legends will be in attendance including Austin Healey who will add a bit of spice to the live commentary over the weekend.

Spectators and supporters will also be able to get close–up views of the action and a live scores relay on a giant screen positioned on the beach.

The tournament at Lusty Glaze is already oversubscribed with applications from over 60 teams so far. However, organisers do have the option of running games on the Friday if additional teams come forward.

There is always a strong turnout from Cornwall including teams made up of players from the Cornish Pirates and the Newquay Hornets. But the event has a nationwide appeal and this year will see the return of squads from Bridgend in Wales, Swinton in Manchester, Sevenoaks in Kent and Ettington in Warwickshire, as well as teams from elsewhere in the South West.

Last year's winners Stash, a team from Newquay, will be in action again this year to defend their title in the hard–fought competition. While many teams take the games very seriously, the emphasis is on fun, community rugby where men, women, boys and girls all play together safely on the soft sand pitches.

As well as fast–paced tag rugby on the beach, spectators will be treated to entertainment throughout the weekend, including music from top local band Small Wonder. As always, the weekend will be rounded off with a spectacular fireworks display above the Cornish cove.

Mr Griffiths added: "Once again this event will put the spotlight on Cornish rugby and Newquay as an amazing event–led tourist destination. It will be an honour to welcome the England players to Lusty Glaze for a spectacular weekend of sport and entertainment."
