BSA Launches Emergency Auction to Send British Junior Team to World Surfing Games

With less than a week and a half to go until the prestigious World Surfing Games, the British Surfing Association (BSA) is being forced to create an emergency auction to be able to send the British Junior Surf Team to the event.

The British Junior Surf Team Needs Your Support

Newquay Headland Hotel donates a generous £1,000 to support the Junior Surf Team

Following recent media coverage, the prestigious Newquay Headland Hotel has stepped in to pledge a generous £1,000 to support the team but a huge shortfall is still remaining and to help plug the gap, the BSA is holding an emergency auction at Newquay's Chy Bar this coming Sunday night (29th April.) As part of its Unplugged music night, The Chy Bar will take voluntary donations on the door and a massive surf–fest auction will kick off at 8pm.

The BSA is currently contacting all surf companies and local businesses to ask for emergency donations for the event and companies such as Animal, Hurley, Etnies, Soulsurfer flipflops, Bubblegum surf wax, Gul, Electric sunglasses, Santa Cruz Clothing, Ignite hats, Reef Flip flops and Gotcha, have already pledged surfboards, wetsuits and clothing for the auction. The Chy Bar will also donate the option of dinner for two in the acclaimed upstairs restaurant and a case of beer as part of their support for the team.

High Hopes for the Team at the World Surfing Games

The BSA will be sending a full team of 12 surfers selected from Britain's best young surfing talent, plus four coaching staff, yet despite continual approaches to key companies, no–one has stepped forward to provide overall for support this vital component of the British surfing scene. Britain is one of 40 nations to be competing in the World Junior Surfing Games in Costa Da Caparica, Portugal, taking place at the beginning of May. This will be the third time Britain has sent a full team to the Junior World Championship and with last year's British medal haul including a silver at the World Surfing Games, a British European Junior Champion and a two world champion kneeboarders, Britain is on a definite roll on the global surfing stage.

Association sponsorship packages are still available and it is hoped that a kit sponsor will be confirmed in the coming days.

Karen Walton, director at the BSA, said: "These junior athletes are on the verge of long, professional careers within their individual fields and will represent Britain as ambassadors of surfing for many years to come. They have all been participating in the BSA structured training programmes throughout the winter months to ensure they are ready for the 2007 season and we have extremely high hopes for all of the individuals involved and a strong team result"

Karen continues, "We are hugely grateful to the Headland Hotel for their generous donation and we are hopeful that local companies and local people will follow this positive example, come along to Sunday's auction and do their bit for this vital part of our ever growing sport."
