Newquay Junior School provides education for boys and girls between the ages of seven and eleven who primarily live in the coastal town of Newquay. The school itself is situated in Edgcumbe Avenue, a pleasant road leading to Animal World, Trenance Gardens and the Boating Lake. The main school was at one time Newquay Grammar School and has retained much of the character of the original building.
The school is proud of its well stocked library/resource centre and information and communication technology suite which are respectively supervised by a library manager and an ICT manager, including an hour after school each day, allowing pupils the opportunity to undertake private study and research.
The school is commited to meeting the needs of the individual child with a carefully planned and structured programme of work. Initially, classes are made up to give a complete cross section of ability and a balance of gender. However, pupils are partially set for certain Mathematics and English activities from Year 3. Even with a range of ability in each class, the teacher recognises each child as an individual and children are promoted annualy according to age throughout their four-year stay at the school.
During their time at school, children may join one or more extra-curricular activities which take place during the lunch break or after school. The following clubs are available: Art Club, Athletics, Basketball, Book Club, Chess, Choir, Computer Club, Cricket, Cross-country, Folk Dancing, Football, Gardening, Science Club, Horse Riding, Gymnastics, Line Dancing, Music, Netball, Recorder (Beginners and Advanced), Rounders, Rugby and Table Tennis.
